Rubbermaid has long been recognized for developing and manufacturing a wide range of plastic containers, including food storage solutions and drinkware. Despite their strong presence in the market, the company relied on OEM partnerships for their water bottle offerings up until 2010, without producing a proprietary design.
To strengthen its brand and showcase innovation, Rubbermaid decided developing its own water bottles, highlighting company’s design capabilities and building consumer trust.
“The Lucid” was one of the flagship concepts for their inaugural product launch.
Challenge: Establish a design direction that aligns with market trends and consumer preferences.
As a late entrant, it was crucial to understand market trends, including consumer preferences, to develop the right product that would effectively appeal to consumers.
The design team conducted both online and offline research to gain these insights and established the concept development direction using the keywords: rational, fluid, approachable, and intuitive.
Design development then focused on translating these keywords into the look and feel of the physical product while also considering ergonomic and convenient usability.

“The Lucid” is designed with a rationally minimal overall form, enhanced by fluid, curved, and approachable surface lines that reflect current market trends and consumer preferences.
The reverse-flared bottle shape features gently recessed surface detailing in the main grip area, guiding the hand to an optimal hold. This design ensures a well-balanced feel, even when filled with water, providing a comfortable and secure grip.
The bottle cap is designed to be simply intuitive, clearly communicating all its functions without confusion.
“The Lucid” strikes a well-balanced aesthetic—minimal and calm, yet intuitive—making it easy to coordinate with your everyday belongings and workout gear. It’s a trendy, casual, and user-friendly water bottle that fits seamlessly into daily life, offering comfort, convenience, and effortless hydration on the go.
